This continues to be an embarrassment of riches. If you are plugged into the news, as we at the INFLUENCER are some twenty-four hours a day, you may have some trepidation in taking a deep breath. Certainly, while you do that, the world will have changed! And not in trivial ways.
Earlier this week, the US stock market behaved much like a bungee-cord. The US threatening tariff wars with Mexico, Canada and the EU? As to the former two, economically insane for Mexico and Canada to engage on a trade war with the US. Those are disparities in bargaining power that neither Mexico nor Canada can overcome. Rather, negotiate! As they both did just before the imposition of the tariffs. Good for all.
A trade war with the EU? Really? Just burning mountains of money at the expense of the consuming public, all the way around. Another “war” that the massive US economy and the voracious consuming public will never lose.
Best to consider that one of the main realities that caused the US to develop at the incredible rate it has is that it is entirely self-reliant for all natural resources required for it to thrive.
Think what you wish about Donald Trump. Whatever else he may be, he is a fundamentally good negotiator. However reckless on first blush some of his “stuff” appears, every world-class macroeconomic thinker readily sees the wisdom on what he has embarked on. Regrettably, too many do so only in private.
Given to strong opinions ourselves, we have to be vigilant that our readers, listeners, all audiences do not confuse our style with substance.
